Okonomi: The Cultural Showcase

Sumo is more than just fighting. During the "Okonomi" segment, the sport's serious facade drops to reveal humor, skill, and tradition.

Okonomi is a special block of exhibition performances unique to the regional tours (Jungyo). Unlike the tense silence of a grand tournament, these segments are designed to educate and entertain.

What will you see?

1. Shokkiri (Comic Sumo)

Two wrestlers (usually tsukebito) demonstrate illegal moves for laughs. Expect to see exaggerated slaps, water-spitting, and even "illegal" kicks. It's slapstick comedy that teaches the rules by breaking them.

2. Sumo Jinku (Songs)

A group of wrestlers enter the ring in decorative aprons to sing traditional folk songs. The lyrics often praise the local area (Yokohama) or tell humorous stories about sumo life. No instruments are used—just their powerful voices.

3. Hairdressing Demonstrations

A Tokoyama (hairdresser) styles a wrestler's hair into the elaborate Oicho-mage (ginkgo leaf topknot) live on stage. It's a rare chance to see the speed and precision of this daily ritual.

4. Drumming (Yagura-daiko)

A demonstration of the drum rhythms used to signal the start and end of a tournament day.

Who performs Okonomi?

These performances are almost exclusively done by the Tsukebito (attendants) of high-ranking wrestlers. These talented young men double as entertainers, showcasing skills that go far beyond wrestling.

Don't Miss It

The Okonomi segment usually happens around 12:00 PM, right before the top-division ceremonies. It's the perfect time to eat your bento lunch while enjoying the show.
